It can be a slow, but devastating experience and it is difficult to know where to turn. One sure sign that your marriage is floundering is when one partner feels that they cant express how they feel. Perhaps theyre worried about the reaction of the other partner. Or perhaps they feel ashamed. The problem is that this inability to communicate can engender hostile feelings on both sides. Never knowing what the other person is thinking or feeling can generate frustration. We want to relate to each other in marriage, thats why we got married in the first place. But sometimes relating seems too difficult. Theres a block in the road and we need to get past it. Failing to express how we truly feel can lead to all sorts of problems. Frequently, I get three of the same inquiries and feel that it would be helpful to address these points and provide some crucial insight into how to approach the topics from a fresh, original perspective. Below, youâll find these questions with some helpful thoughts to consider. Question #1: How many questions should I ask, which ones should I ask and when do I ask them? Essentially, they want to know how to approach this aspect of the interview. Answers: In sales, more so than in any other profession, itâs not about what you ask during an interview, rather itâs about how you come across when you ask it. When Iâm interviewing potential applicants, sometimes they ask intelligent questions, though their body language and tone of voice tell me that they are skeptical, unfocused, disinterested or simply not engaged. In other instances, their questions are so unoriginal that it almost seems like they cut and pasted them from an internet article. It sounds harsh, but the result is that I donât pass them on to my clients and they donât get to interview. Companies pay my recruiting firm a lot of money partly to weed job seekers who do this out of the equation. What Do Strong Sales Interviewers Do? * A strong interviewer will be asking questions throughout the interview that are pertinent to the conversation. This shows that they are diligent listeners, understand complex situations and are engaged in the job weâre hired to recruit for. * They make it pleasurable to speak with them. They donât bore me by asking questions simply because itâs customary to ask questions. * The most intelligent, persuasive and highly paid candidates base their questions on extensive web research that theyâve done about the company and the industry. Question #2: What questions do I like to ask interviewers and how I do judge the validity of that personâs answers. Answer #2: Here are 3 examples: 1. âIf I were to meet one of your friends or colleagues at an event and they didnât know you were interviewing at my company, what do you think they would say about you?â Letâs put it this way, if their answer is, âBob would say Iâm a great guy, a great employee and Iâm great at what I do,â itâs a red flag. In the real world, people simply donât speak that way. Instead, I look for thoughtful answers such as, âIt depends who you ask. If it were my former boss whom I made a lot of money for it would be positive. If you asked a client Iâd sure hope that they would describe me as hard working and as someone with integrity.â 2 âDescribe a time that you failed?â I like to hear heartfelt stories that are honest. Rarely, do I judge an interviewer based on their mistake. Everyone fails in business at some point. Not everyone is secure enough to admit it. I particularly like the people who had the wind knocked out of them, though proved they were resilient and got back on their game. 3. âWhat do you think I want in an employee?â The most effective sales people can see things from other peopleâs viewpoints. Personally, I look for passionate, hard working, reliable and autonomous individuals. Essentially, I want someone who can execute so I can focus on my job. Regarding the answer, the closer they are, the more I respect them as applicants. Question #3: âHow should I phrase my elevator pitch and what should I say.â Answer #3: I look for people who donât oversell themselves, but donât undersell their abilities. For me, something they say has to be original and interesting enough for me to want to speak to them further. In general, I like genuine and positive.

Why Nebraska Has The Lowest Unemployment Rate in the US During the Great Recession, North Dakota was the nationâs golden child, where the unemployment rate never topped 4.3% even as joblessness across the rest of the country reached double digits. But as the economic recovery has played out, another state has undercut North Dakotaâs impressively low rate: Nebraska. At 2.6%, the stateâs unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation. The rate for June is also Nebraskaâs second lowest rate recorded in more than a decade and lower than North Dakotaâs 3.1% rate, according to monthly local unemployment data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While North Dakota can attribute its low unemployment rate to the stateâs fracking boom, the reasons for Nebraskaâs low joblessness are less clear. However, one explanation could be that the stateâs job market didnât suffer as much as the rest of the country during the dark days of the recession. âIn Nebraska, it was just a bad recession rather than a Great Recession,â says Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. âWe were hit hard by the recession, but not nearly as hard as many other states.â Whatâs more, Nebraskans have their stateâs diverse economy to thank. âThereâs not one segment of the economy that dominates the state, such as automobile manufacturing in Michigan. We donât have anybody that big,â says John Albin, Nebraskaâs commissioner of labor. And it didnât hurt that agriculture, the industry that contributes the most to the stateâs GDP, âwas going through a boom time right when the rest of the economy was tanking,â he says. Crop prices were up thanks to a falling dollar and robust overseas demand. Corn, for instance, reached $7.50 per bushel in early 2008. That meant âmanufacturers were still making farm equipment and car dealerships were still selling pickups,â Albin says. âIn this last recession, that cushioned us a lot.â The state was largely spared from the housing market crash, too. âConstruction activity, including home building, did drop sharply during the Great Recession. However, our home prices had not risen that much and therefore did not fall much during the housing crisis,â Thompson says. The median property value in Nebraska was $122,600 between 2007 to 2009, according to the U.S. Census. Between 2010 to 2012, it increased to $127,800. (By comparison, Florida, among the states hardest hit by the housing market crash, saw median property value drop from $210,800 to $154,900 during the same period.) Nebraskaâs geography was a factor in its dodge of that crisis. The stateâs landlocked location in the midwest means it has few natural barriers to population growth. Oceans and rivers limit housing expansion in places like California, New York City, or Massachusetts, which saw rapid increases in home values before the housing market crashed. âIn Nebraska, if demand is there you can always just convert more farmland to housing,â Thompson says. In explaining the stateâs current 2.6% jobless rate, Thompson points to what he says is Nebraskaâs high quality labor force. At 88.5%, Nebraska ranks second nationwide in high school graduation, according to the most recent data released by the Department of Education. (First place is neighboring Iowa, where the rate is 89.7%.). According to the Census, 28.5% of Nebraskans 25 years of age and older hold a bachelorâs degree or higher, just under the nationwide rate of 28.8%. âIn short, Nebraskans have good resumes in terms of education and historyâ"these are the types of workers who generally have lower unemployment rates and also fair well during a recession. Employers try to find ways to keep such employees and when workers with good resumes do lose their jobs, they are usually able to find one quicker,â Thompson says. Indeed, in June, the national unemployment rate among high school graduates was 5.4%, according to the BLS figures. For individuals without a high school diploma, it was 8.2%. To be sure, not everyone is convinced that the stateâs super low unemployment rate is a sign of a healthy economy. A closer look at job growth âportrays an economy thatâs not as healthy as when just unemployment is considered,â says Ernie Goss, an economics professor at Creighton University in Omaha. In the past three months, payrolls in the state have dropped from just over 1 million in April to 999,300 in May to 997,000 in June. Goss pegs that dip to the same factors that buoyed Nebraskaâs economy during the recessionâ"commodity prices, which have declined with the strengthening U.S. dollar. âYou can trace slowing job growth to the farm economy,â Goss says. BLS employment figures donât capture farm jobs, but they would reflect a slow down in the services that support the agriculture industry. Nebraskaâs low jobless rate and decreasing employment is certainly a disconnectâ"youâd expect unemployment to increase as employment shrank. There are a few theories to explain the rift: For one thing, Nebraskans have a propensity to hold multiple jobsâ"7.9% do so, compared to 4.9% nationallyâ"which means if a worker with two jobs loses one, she would be considered unemployed. Goss says that workers who lose a job could be leaving the state or returning to work on farms â" both scenarios would mean they wouldnât budge the stateâs jobless rate. Three hundred applicants, two months of interviews, referrals, tests, and portfolios, and in the end, I got the job. Me. So, even though Iâm leaving my first job a little earlier than I may have anticipated, and I may be a twenty-something recent college grad, Iâm pretty pleased with my decision and eager to move forward with my career. And Iâm also insanely scared, because once again, Iâm going to be the new girl in the office. And after the extensive interview process, Iâve met just about everyone Iâll be working with. Let me tell you, Iâm undoubtedly going to be the youngest in the office, too. Iâm starting over. Again. So, how does one college grad handle so much change in under a year? Bubble wrap, for starters; both for packing purposes and as an inexpensive stress reliever. Secondly, this list of reminders that you should constantly keep in mind as a young professional: 1. Age is just a number. As the old saying goes, a baby shark is still a shark. Age doesnât define you. You may be thirty years younger than the person you share a cubicle with, so what? What defines you is your attitude and your ability to go get what you want. Donât ever let anyone respect you or your work less just because they donât understand you or your generation. 2. Remember your value. CAREEREALISM says it best: âEvery job is temporary.â You should constantly be on the lookout for something better. Whether itâs a higher position within the company you currently work for, or because you know youâre worth more somewhere else. It doesnât mean you have to start looking for jobs the second you sit down at your new desk, but just remember how much youâre capable of at any time. Itâs important to take the early stages in any new job as a learning experience. Gather as much information as possible, and be the best you can. But if you ever feel like youâre not being appreciated for all you do after time, and all other options have been exhausted (such as voicing your feelings to your boss), then by all means, never forget how significant you are. 3. Network. Network. Network. Everywhere you go, connect with professionals. Gain knowledge, experience, and skills from everyone you meet â" good and bad. Every single person you meet can and might just benefit you sooner or later. Build your professional relationships and never burn bridges. Everyone you meet in your career, even in the early stages, is valuable. 4. Be who you are. Sounds corny, right? The best way to succeed in your new job, career, or just life in general is to be unapologetically you. You could be someone else, or pretend like you know what youâre doing when you donât, but youâre only going to hurt yourself in the long run. Donât lie in an interview; donât spoil your profession by being a phony. Donât act like someone youâre not when communicating with those you work with. You want your peers to trust you, to know YOU. 5. Never be afraid to start over. Starting over means youâre growing. It means youâre developing as a professional and as a human being. It means youâre showing, each day, more and more of whom you are. And each time itâll be only a sliver of the person youâre going to someday be. When you look back, youâre going to want to remember starting over and how exciting, terrifying, and absolutely exhilarating it was. You never want to be in the same spot. Keep moving forward. If youâre starting over, again, thatâs OK. It means you had the guts to start. And if youâre just starting, donât forget how far youâre about to go. Cara Jo was born and raised in South Jersey.
